How UV-C keeps filtered water fresh

UV-C light guarding filtered water

Filtering water is the headline act, but there is a quieter job that matters just as much: keeping that water fresh between the moment it is clarified and the moment you pour it. That is the work of UV-C, and it happens entirely out of sight.

What UV-C actually is

UV-C is a specific, short-wavelength band of ultraviolet light. It is invisible to us, and it has been used for water and surface treatment for a long time because of one useful trait: it disrupts microorganisms so they cannot multiply. No chemicals, no taste, no residue — just light doing the work.

Why fresh water needs a guard

Once water has been clarified, it still sits and waits for the next pour. Any system that holds water benefits from a way to keep that standing water from becoming a place where bacteria settle in. A periodic dose of UV-C addresses exactly that gap.

How it works inside BetterTap

Better Tap pairs MAZE filtration with a built-in UV-C guard so the two play different roles:

  • MAZE reduces a range of contaminants while keeping the healthy minerals.
  • UV-C then guards the water between pours, helping it stay fresh.
  • Together they cover both what comes in and what waits inside.

Because it is light rather than a chemical, UV-C does nothing to the taste or mineral content of your water. It simply stands watch.

Low-effort by design

The system runs on its own, and the UV lamp is replaced about every 12 months to keep it performing at its best. You can read more about that in our UV lamp guide. The point of the technology is that you never have to think about it — every pour is simply fresh.
