What NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401, and 55 Class B actually mean

Dispensing filtered water from BetterTap

Shopping for a water system means running into a string of numbers — NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401, and 55 Class B — that can feel like a code only engineers understand. The good news is that each number stands for a specific, testable promise. Once you know what they verify, the labels become genuinely useful instead of intimidating.

Why certification matters at all

NSF International is an independent organization that writes standards for water treatment products. When a system is certified by an NSF/ANSI standard, it means a third party tested it and confirmed it does what it claims. In other words, the performance is verified by someone other than the company selling it.

The four numbers, decoded

  • NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects — the things you notice. This is about reducing chlorine taste and odor so the water is pleasant to drink.
  • NSF/ANSI 53 covers health effects. This addresses contaminants with a potential health impact, such as lead and certain other substances.
  • NSF/ANSI 401 covers emerging contaminants — the newer concerns like trace pharmaceuticals and chemicals that turn up in modern water supplies.
  • NSF 55 (Class B) covers microbiological treatment — the UV stage that treats microorganisms in the water.

Reading a label with confidence

A system certified across all four standards is making a broad, verified claim: it improves taste, addresses health-related contaminants, tackles emerging concerns, and adds microbiological UV treatment. That is a far stronger position than a vague "filters your water" promise with nothing behind it.
